Botox vs Restylane
They're the top two cosmetic injectables on the market, but BOTOX® and Restylane® achieve their goals through very different methods. For this reason, a comparison of the two procedures is more like comparing apples to oranges than apples to apples.
First and foremost, unlike Restylane®, BOTOX® is NOT a dermal filler. Instead, BOTOX® injections contain a purified protein derived from a toxin called bacterium clostridium botulinum. This substance is FDA approved as a treatment for facial wrinkles, and works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the chemical responsible for transmitting motion signals to the muscles. Facial muscles that are injected with BOTOX® will weaken and contract less, smoothing out the fine lines that such muscle contractions usually create. Restylane®, meanwhile, is the world's top dermal filler, and a legitimate alternative to BOTOX® treatments. Like BOTOX®, Restylane® involves a series of tiny facial injections, but rather than deactivating muscles, Restylane® actually uses a natural gel called hyaluronic acid to level out wrinkles and fill depressions. It can also be used for lip augmentation. Restylane® is FDA approved, uses no animal products, and is particularly safe thanks to its use of hyaluronic acid-- a substance which occurs naturally in the human body (similar dermal fillers like Juvederm, Hylaform, and Perlane also use hyaluronic acid). By re-establishing connective tissues, Restylane® effectively increases the volume of the skin, dramatically reducing everything from forehead wrinkles to smile lines and dark under eye circles. Restylane® results can last as long as a year or more.
