Kim Kardashian Gets Botox, Experiences Side Effects

Socialite Kim Kardashian, 29, is back in the plastic surgery spotlight, this time spurring criticism after a not-so-successful Botox injection. After a playful comment from teen crooner, Justin Bieber, about Kim’s age, the reality television star decided she needed to do something. On the most recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, she visited a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills to discuss the barely-visible crow’s feet around her eyes. The surgeon suggested she get Botox injections to smooth out her face, and Kim decided to go ahead with the procedure.

Not long after the needle had been inserted did Kim’s eyes begin to itch and water uncontrollably. “I don’t know what to do. My eyes just won’t stop watering,” she said. “Seriously. Something’s wrong.” Her agony worsened when she glanced in the mirror and saw unsightly purple bruising around the injection site. Her sister, Khloe, told her, “It looks like someone socked you in your face.”

Concerned that she was having an allergic reaction to the Botox, Kim contacted her family physician who reassured her that bruising was a common side effect of Botox and that her symptoms would clear up in about a week. Until then, Kim would have to hide her darkened eyes behind large sunglasses.

While Kim Kardashian’s Botox experience incited an array of critical articles and blog posts, there is something positive that has come out of this: She can now be a visible example of the side effects of Botox. Kim was surprised at how she reacted to the Botox, but it is perfectly normal to experience some itching and irritation at the injection site, as well as slight bruising and pain. These symptoms are mild and subside after a short period of time. At a consultation with any certified skincare specialist, these possible side effects should be discussed so patients are well aware of what to expect.

Was Kim Kardashian a Good Candidate for Botox?

As she discussed the horrible side effects of Botox with her family doctor, Kim slowly realized that the results were not worth it. “When I looked in the mirror and saw how bruised and swollen my face was, I couldn’t believe I put myself through this.” She said. Her doctor informed her that any injection under the skin can cause bruising and irritation, adding “Be careful with medications. You do them when you need to, and you certainly don’t need to.”

Kim’s doctor shrewdly pointed out that the mild wrinkles around her eyes did not need Botox treatment, and someone with youthful skin like hers is not an ideal candidate for Botox. Generally, Botox patients have more defined laugh lines, wrinkles and fine lines on their foreheads and brow lines. Women who are older and have clear signs of aging are told to get Botox to smooth their skin. Botox is not recommended for younger women as the results are not permanent and will require follow up treatments to maintain their new look, which means a lot more needle pricks and bruising for Kim if she decides to stick with Botox.

While getting Botox prompted more negative images of Kim Kardashian, it can be a helpful treatment for many women. In fact, many actresses have proudly admitted to having Botox injections to improve their look, including Vanessa Williams, Jenny McCarthy and Courteney Cox-Arquette. Botox continues to be one of the most requested cosmetic treatments today, and more and more women are opting for this quick and effective procedure. Whether Kim Kardashian agrees with the masses or not remains to be seen. For now, the reality star has vowed to never get Botox again, at least not until the age of 40.
