LAVIV™ is the latest product to hit the injectable market, and it looks like their technique of using a patient’s own cells is about to catch on quickly. LAVIV was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of smile lines, also known as nasolabial folds and laugh lines. LAVIV serves as a viable alternative to other dermal fillers like Radiesse and Restylane.
Smile lines are some of the most difficult facial wrinkles to treat. Also known as nasolabial folds, these lines run from the edge of the nose all the way down to the corner of the mouth. Like most wrinkles, they are caused by the skin and muscle’s breakdown due to age, sun exposure, and genetics. But some people start seeing nasolabial folds on their faces as early as their 20s—long before many other types of wrinkles develop. Smile lines are often deep, which make them ill contenders for BOTOX® Cosmetic and other muscle-relaxing injectables.
LAVIV (azificel-T) is unlike any other dermal filler available. There are two main components of LAVIV that make it stand out from the crowd, and that’s the material used and its treatment length.LAVIV is autologous, which means that its made out of a patient’s own cells. Your LAVIV therapy begins by taking a biopsy from behind your ear. The cells are then harvested in a lab and frozen before being injected into the patient’s face. Normally, three separate treatments are performed three weeks apart. An entire LAVIV therapy, from the initial biopsy to the third treatment, can take over two months to complete.
Like LAVIV, Botox is an injectable—and that’s about where the similarities end. Botox is made from botulinum toxin A, a synthetic material that paralyzes or freezes muscle contractions that cause wrinkles. Botox does not plump the skin the way LAVIV and other dermal fillers do. While Botox is great for crow’s feet, bunny lines, frown lines, and other facial wrinkles, smile lines are best left to dermal fillers like LAVIV.
